4. Miss Griffith's Suicide

All throughout Suspiria, the film continually gives viewers clues that of all of the members of the coven, Miss Griffith is the one who is most uncomfortable with their actions.

Guadagnino and Mukdeeprom continuously frame her as being literally isolated from the rest of the group and every shot of her sees her struggling with the guilt she feels, tying her in more directly to the film's thematic thesis than arguably any of the other supporting members of the coven.

Which is why it's so shocking when she suddenly stands up at the dinner table and stabs herself repeatedly in the neck, spewing her blood all over the place. This is made all the more WTF by Guadagnino's weaponizing of the cinematic form against the audience.

Miss Griffith's scene at the dinner table is played in tandem with a scene of Susie and Blanc in the mirror-walled rehearsal room. As both scenes build, the tension of each reaches a high point. But then suddenly, the Susie and Blanc scene abruptly ends and cuts to Sara in her room instead. It's jarring and forces viewers to assume that the tension they felt must have simply been misplaced.

Then, just as the audience begins to settle back and feel somewhat safe, Miss Griffith suddenly commits the deed. It feels so unexpected and impactful because the film deliberately spent the build-up to it misdirecting the audience, only to strike when they least expected it.
