10 Biggest WTF Moments In Suspiria
2. THAT Dance Sequence
The moment that everyone is talking about.
Months ago, at CinemaCon, a scene from this film was shown to those in attendance that reportedly made several members of the press and theatre companies run from the screening in fear and disgust. Susie's audition for the protagonist role in Volk is that scene. And yeah, upon review, it's pretty easy to see why people would have run.
This sequence cuts back and forth between Susie's audition and the recently-disgraced Olga being tortured by the dance in the mirror-walled practice room below. What starts out as fairly harmless, with Olga just getting thrown around the room a bit, quickly becomes something much more intensely unsettling.
Susie continues dancing, causing Olga's body to twist and contort in increasingly grotesque ways. Olga's bones shatter, her jaw cracks apart, and even her bladder is subjected to the force of Susie's dance. By the end of it, Olga is little more than a lump of broken limbs and bones, crumpled up on the floor of the practice room, bleeding profusely.
It is not a sequence for the faint of heart, as Guadagnino takes joy in prolonging the sequence as far as he can to make it as uncomfortable as humanly possible.
