10 Bleakest Endings In Horror Movies

Perhaps the most obscure film on this list, Shivers is a 1975 movie that was one of David Cronenberg’s early efforts before he would go on to direct some of his more well-known works. Set in an apartment building, the movie revolves around a strange parasite which spreads amongst the residents of the building. Once infected, the parasite causes a person to become aggressive and violent.

It’s a simple, and even somewhat silly, concept that is elevated greatly by the talent and vision of Cronenberg. Shivers manages that rare feat of capturing a very real sense of dread as our main protagonist slowly becomes aware of what is happening to his fellow residents but, alas, by the time he tries to escape he is too late. Every escape route he tries is blocked by his former friends; every hiding place is found.

The film ends with the main character being surrounded and finally infected by the residents. As the movie comes to a close we see them leave their apartment building and head out into the night, eager to spread their unique plague.
