10 Box Office Hits That Everybody Expected To Be Huge Flops

3. Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl

When you actually stop and think about it for a moment, the idea that Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl got green-lit in the first place is pretty incredible. Based on a theme park ride and centering around pirates - a concept which had failed at the box office numerous times in recent history - it sounds like a recipe for box office disaster. Still, Disney took the plunge regardless, and thanks in large part to Johnny Depp's appealingly one-note performance as Jack Sparrow, Pirates Of The Caribbean was a huge success. Taking over $650 million at the box office, it ensured that audiences would be subjected to a slew of sequels for as long as they remained profitable. Johnny Depp's cinematic fortunes haven't been the same since the original run of Pirates movies - if any once great actor can be said to have transformed into a bona-fide flop generator, Depp is the one, although hopefully the upcoming Black Mass will signal a return to form.
