10 Burning Questions Upcoming Movies MUST Answer
2. How Is Quaritch Alive? - Avatar: The Way Of Water
The Question
James Cameron has made no secret about the fact that the antagonist of the original Avatar movie, Colonel Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang), would be returning in all four sequels in some fashion.
The gorgeous first trailer for sequel Avatar: The Way of Water seemingly confirms that Quaritch has his own avatar this time around, but how exactly is he alive and kicking after Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) shot him in the chest with several arrows at the end of the first film?
The Likely Answer
It's entirely possible that Cameron keeps the specifics of Quaritch's resurrection ambiguous, though hopefully that's not the case. As Avatar is a sci-fi franchise set in the mid-22nd century, Cameron certainly has a number of far-flung options available to him.
Perhaps his body was hastily retrieved by the RDA and they were able to insert him into an avatar before his brain decayed, or maybe it's something more outwardly ridiculous like Quaritch being cloned during the decade between movies.
The former certainly seems the more sensible and likely of the two options, that in a last ditch effort to save his life, Quaritch was turned into the very thing he hates. That's nothing if not an intriguing wrinkle for his character arc in the sequels, and could even put him at odds with the RDA itself.
