10 Cancelled Movie Sequels (That Could Still Happen)

Cancellation

Edge of Tomorrow wasn't a massive hit at the box-office, but it has gained a dedicated following since its release, and there's been plenty of fan demand for a sequel.

Unfortunately though, work on a followup has continued to stall, and in the six years since the original, it's basically made no meaningful progress.

While we've heard that a script for the sequel does exist, one of the last major updates we had about the project came from director Doug Liman, and it wasn't a good one. In November 2019, the filmmaker stated that he had "no idea" if the sequel was happening, citing scheduling issues as being a major problem.

Tom Cruise isn't getting any younger, and with the actor currently in the middle of shooting two Mission Impossible movies - in addition to the delays and complications brought on by the coronavirus pandemic - Edge of Tomorrow 2 isn't officially cancelled yet, but it's not in good shape either.

Why It's Not Dead

There's still a spark of hope, however. As we mentioned, a script for the project does apparently exist, and earlier this year, actress Emily Blunt told IndieWire that she still wanted to make the sequel. In addition, a January 2020 Instagram post by Liman indicated that he was still developing the movie - yes, even though he previously said he was unsure about the project's chances.

The fate of this one probably depends on Cruise. If he still wants to do it after finishing up Mission Impossible, then it seems like everybody else is ready to go.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
