10 Changes The Oscars Desperately Needs To Make
7. Make Screeners Digital
Screeners are the copies of films that get sent to voters to ensure they make informed decision on who they are voting for, as often the vast multitude of nominated films makes it impossible for all to be seen in theatres before voting begins.
The problem is that each one of these screeners are burnt onto discs. Millions of DVDs sent out to thousands of Academy voters. Not only are these plastic pieces of rubbish that will become obsolete and potentially get sent straight to landfill if not recycled properly, but the Academy’s refusal to move screeners to digital files or an all-encompassing streaming service just for voters is hurting certain movie’s chances of winning. A lot of modern laptops don’t have disc drives and Academy voters are very busy on-the-go people. It complicates things a lot further for them.
Not every studio will have the budget to send out screeners to absolutely everyone, meaning some of the smaller films will go unseen and therefore unconsidered.
