5. Christmas In Connecticut
Some of the films on this list may prompt argument over their status as "Christmas movies" through being only partly set at Christmas or in genres that are not overtly festive. This one, however, couldn't be more Christmassy if it was wrapped in tinsel with an angel on top.
This beloved 1940s romantic comedy sees Barbara Stanwyck's New York food writer having to cook up a fake wholesome Connecticut family for the holiday season in order to maintain her reputation. Many festive scrapes ensue, all of them heavily themed to the season that the story is all about.
It is utterly baffling, therefore, that studio Warner Bros. chose to put out the movie, whose very title points to the time of year it should be watched, in August 1945. It didn't stop the movie from becoming a hit, though.
A remake, a somewhat surprising choice of feature directoring debut for Arnold Schwarzenegger, did actually come out at Christmas on TV in 1992. Unfortunately in all other ways it failed to recapture the Christmas magic of its predecessor.
