10 Comic Book Adaptations That Messed Up Iconic Stories
3. Spider-Man 3
The black suit/symbiote Spider-Man story line from the comics is one of the web head's most popular sagas and most definitely deserves a film dedicated to it. Director Sam Raimi had no interest or intention of having the villain Venom in his movie however, and instead wanted to focus on Sandman and Harry Osborne. None the less, the studio pulled a dick move and forced the villain into the film, compromising both the character of Venom and the feature itself.
Sure, the movie still made a tonne of money, but it's mixed critical and fan response led to the first Spider-Man reboot, which Sony also messed up, as previously mentioned in the first entry. It's a shame because there clearly is a good film somewhere within Spider-Man 3, with the fight scenes against Sandman being pretty awesome and the three movie arc of Peter Parker's rivalry with Osborne drawing to a satisfying conclusion.
It's clear Venom's presence is unwanted though, and should have been saved for a later sequel. The villain is just an afterthought, and while the symbiote corrupted Parker in the comics, turning him more violent and aggressive, here it transforms him into a street dancing goth. Huh?
A Venom solo film has been released in the years since, with rumours that he could soon battle it out with Spider-Man on the big screen once more, sooner rather than later.
