10 Comics You Must Read Before Spider-Man: Far From Home
8. The Superior Foes Of Spider-Man
When Spider-Man made his MCU debut in Captain America: Civil War, it was obvious that this would be an incarnation that would strive to set itself apart from his prior cinematic forays. No more Uncle Ben, no more spider bites, and thankfully no more repeats of previously explored villains.
It's almost commendable how much self-control has been shown by Marvel Studios in their handling of Spider-Man's rogues' gallery thus far, holding off on A-Listers such as the Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus or Venom in favour of lesser-known and previously unadapted baddies. The fact that Vulture is widely considered one of, if not the, best villains to so far grace the MCU is a testament to the success of this strategy, and here's hoping that Mysterio is as every bit a layered and captivating villain in Far From Home.
Such a focus on the smaller, whackier villains of Spider-Man in recent adaptations is perhaps inspired by the acclaimed series The Superior Foes Of Spider-Man, a comic that details the adventures of the less-maniacal villains to ever been webbed up and left outside a police station.
Funny, sharp, thrilling and thought-provoking, The Superior Foes Of Spider-Man was a unique comic in how it made a clear distinction between 'evil' and 'crooked' in the world of supervillains, and how getting knocked out by a kid who tells you dad jokes for ten years could just maybe make you even more of an undesirable than you already were.
