10 Common Movie Myths Everyone Believes

5. Trace The Call

Trace The Call

By now our hero is tired, hurting, and trapped in harm€™s way. He needs backup. Conveniently, the guard had a cell phone stashed away in his back pocket. The only problem is, the protagonist doesn€™t know where he is. It wouldn€™t be much of a hideout if you could look up the address, after all. He calls Command, and they tell him not to worry. They€™ll just trace the call to find his location. The only catch: it will take several minutes to determine where the call is coming from. He€™ll have to keep the phone active and out of sight until they can zero in. Nope. Have you ever accidentally called an emergency line like 911? Chances are they called you right back to make sure no one was dying. Contrary to the suspense building €œtrace the call!€ trope, it doesn€™t take long to figure out from where a call originated. This is done through advanced telephone systems like E911, which can attach a location to a phone call. It doesn€™t matter if you€™re on a cell phone or landline, tracing a phone call is about as easy as launching Google Maps €“ no wait time required.
