10 Common Movie Myths Everyone Believes

6. Shoot Out The Locks

Bullets For argument's sake, let's say our man is a modern medical marvel, and awakens from his slumber bleary eyed but otherwise alright. Now he's got to find a way out of his cell. He's broken fee of his shackles and subdued the guard, retrieving a pistol in the process. But the door is locked. No matter, just use the handgun to shoot out the lock, right? Freedom is just a pull of the trigger away. Only it isn't. While bullets are treated like skeleton keys in the movies, they seldom work that way in the real world. Even from point-blank range, a handgun won't be able to crack a padlock or deadbolt. In fact, you'd need something that packs a really heavy punch, like a shotgun or high-powered rifle to destroy the entire locking mechanism if you wanted to shoot your way out of a room. Though it may not be worth the risk, as the ensuing debris from the blast is likely to injure anyone standing too close to the lock. It may seem a tad old fashioned, but a key is still the best way to open a lock €” not a bullet.
