10 Completed Movies You Will Never See
4. The Golem
In the dawn of cinema, few precautions were taken to preserve film reels, which has resulted in thousands of features in the early 20th century being destroyed. 75% of all silent films are lost forever, including London After Midnight, Alfred Hitchcock's The Mountain Eagle, and dozens of vampire films released long before Nosferatu or Dracula.
But among the of the most famous lost films are the first two instalments of The Golem trilogy. The first entry revolves around an antique dealer called Troedler, who stumbles upon a golem inside a Jewish temple. Troedler resurrects the clay creature, hoping to turn it into his humble servant.
Things take a wrong turn after the golem falls for his daughter, Jessica. When Jessica rejects its advances, the monster goes on a murderous rampage. (Now you see where Frankenstein got its inspiration.)
But apart from a couple of clips of Paul Wegener stomping around in his golem costume, no footage of the film or its sequel, The Golem and the Dancing Girl, exists.
Fortunately, the prequel, The Golem: How He Came into the World, did survive, and can be viewed online.
