10 Completely Original Movies To Look Out For In 2018

1. A Quiet Place

A Quiet Place Emily Blunt
Paramount Pictures

Release Date: April 6

If A Quiet Place is even half as good as its debut trailer, we're all in for quite the thrill-ride when it launches next April.

Few things are as entertaining as a thriller movie with a creative hook, and A Quiet Place has one of the best hooks in recent memory: do not make any sound, or you will be killed.

The movie follows a family (led by John Krasinski and Emily Blunt) living on a farm in what looks like the present day. Here, they must keep all noise to a minimum, lest their bangs and clatters attract the attention of a mysterious supernatural evil.

This concept opens the door for dozens and dozens of interesting world-building elements and horror scenarios, and the trailer shows a few off. Characters can be seen walking on sand to muffle their footprints, playing board games by throwing the dice onto a blanket, communicating in sign language, and marking footprints on the floorboards that indicate where to step.

Sure, there are some reasons to be apprehensive - director John Krasinski isn't known for his stellar work behind the camera, and he's never made a horror flick - but A Quiet Place seems so easy to get right, since its concept is already doing half the work.

This will be awkward to watch in the cinema, though - please don't be that person who's constantly ruffling wrappers.
