10 Completely Original Movies To Look Out For In 2018

For director Duncan Jones, Mute is a return to the type of small-scale sci-fi film that helped him make his name.

Before helming 2016's divisive Warcraft adaptation, Jones was responsible for 2009's Moon and 2011's Source Code, high-concept thrillers that managed to do a lot with a relatively low budget.

His next film, Mute, is set to complete that trio. It follows a mute bartender searching for his missing girlfriend in a futuristic Berlin, and the movie's colourful, Blade Runner-inspired visuals will make it look a lot more expensive than it actually is.

The great thing about Jones' sci-fi movies is that he never lets his concept become a gimmick. Mute won't be full of "hilarious" in-your-face comedy scenes where the lead struggles to communicate with others; his disability will just be a normal part of the character, and the movie won't point at it with a giant neon arrow just to make you sympathize with him.

Mute is a Netflix original production so it will launch on the streaming service sometime next year. Keep your eyes peeled!

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
