Here’s something you might not have known – The Rebels won the Battle of Hoth. Imperial objectives were to destroy the Rebel’s base and capture Luke. But the Rebel base was mobile, meaning that all they needed to do was evacuate. And so they did, leaving the Empire in possession of a few frozen caves and some charred wreckage.

The man solely responsible for this was one Admiral Ozzel. It was he who brought the Imperial Fleet out of hyperspace too close to Hoth, allowing the Rebels to detect the Imperial fleet and raise a planetary shield, rendering orbital bombardment ineffective.

This, some believe, was no accident. Key to the theory is Ozzel’s behaviour. He is pompous, prone to jealousy, and arrogant enough to question Vader to his face. And so, entirely by design, he was a man just smart enough to perform his assigned task, and just stupid enough to become so enamoured with his secret agent status that his bloated ego would lead to his inevitable execution.

It was a stroke of Rebel genius, granting them a handy early warning system and a loose end that would helpfully tie up itself.
