2. Damien - The Omen
In Richard Donner's The Omen, Robert Thorn adopts a child called Damien after his wife's newborn son dies. For the first five years, nothing about Damien seems out of the ordinary.
But after a series of grisly murders and mysterious accidents occur, Thorn learns his adopted child is the Antichrist and is destined to take over the world when he comes of age. To stop armageddon, Thorn is left with no choice but to kill the boy that he has raised since infancy.
Even though The Omen has very little gore, it's renowned as one of the scariest films ever made. And it's not just because of that haunting score (although that definitely helped).
What makes the film work is Harvey Stephens' performance as Damien. Instead of portraying him as generically evil, Damien just acts like... a child. He seems to be oblivious, even playful, as he encourages those around him to commit murder or take their own life.
The way Damien screams for his father not to kill him in the final scene is so heart-wrenching, it's easy to forget he is the spawn of Satan.
