A Tale of Two Sisters is a South Korean psychological horror movie that also plays with the family drama genre. Out in the seclusion of their estate, they are wracked with not only frosty relations, but also the fleeting appearances of horrifying ghosts.

The poster’s use of bleak colours immediately conveys the darkness which cloaks the family.

The father’s look of anger and distain is bound to increase anybody’s anxiety, bringing back childhood memories of what it was like to be on the receiving end of a parent’s disapproval and anger. The mother’s slight hint of a sly smile only adds to the uneasiness.

The two girls, the focal point of the poster, provide the on-brand horror creepiness. Though not identical, they are close enough mirrors to recall horror’s love of sinister twins (see The Grady Twins for this trope’s peak).

The image of blood-soaked children is enough to jolt anybody with an ounce of empathy. One of the girls is slumped into some kind of sedation. The other is held back against the chair by her stepmother’s firm grip. The scene depicted is well executed creepy realism, as effective as even the most inventive supernatural scenario.
