10 Creepy Movie Moments That Gave Us Nightmares As Kids

9. The McCallisters' Furnace

home alone furnace If you've seen Risky Business, you know how great it is to be left home alone as a kid. You can wear your shades indoors, dance around to overrated rock songs, run a prostitution ring and even hook up with Rebecca De Mornay on a train. What could be better? Home Alone's Kevin McCallister thinks he's in for a similarly good time (though, presumably with less sex-for-hire) when his family mistakenly leaves him behind in Chicago for Christmas. He gets to eat whatever he wants, watch gangster movies, and best of all Buzz is a thousand miles away. Of course, his vacation alone isn't all it's chalked up to be. He has to deal with the Wet Bandits, who are trying to rob and flood every house in the neighborhood. And his neighbor Marley seems a little too bug-eyed to have not killed someone before. But most daunting is his furnace. Nothing is scarier than a dark basement when you're alone. The David Fincher movie Zodiac goes on an unnecessary-yet-amazing tangent based on this very premise. But throw into that equation a hallucination of the furnace demon-talking to young Kevin and you've got the scariest moment of Macaulay Culkin's life that didn't involve Neverland Ranch.
