10 Criminally Underrated 90's Movies

9. Man on the Moon (1999)

Quick, name a movie where Jim Carrey doesn't overact! Well, The Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind... but name one where his comedic timing and dramatic skills come together? Milos Forman's great character study of the eccentric and controversial comedian Andy Kaufman plays as both an examination of the man and the industry he inhabited and loved. Roger Ebert put it best when he stated "I knew Andy Kaufman, and Jim Carrey IS Andy Kaufman". Giving one of the finest performances of his career, Carrey helps us on the journey of understanding the off-beat comedian's life and career. From his stand-up routines to his TV stints on SNL and Taxi, Kaufman's unique and at times frustrating brand of jokes both humored and befuddled audiences alike. The question always was with him, who was the "real" Andy and who was the persona he wanted you to see and believe. It is a difficult and simple answer, he was whatever he believed in. Never shying away from controversy or ridicule Kaufman would continued with his routine to the ninth degree, not unlike Carrey in his own comedy styling.

Writer and film-nut I'm willing to have perfectly reasonable discussions about the movies I love... on the internet... perhaps I asked too much. Read and comment on my personal blog too at cityuponahillmedia.com/blog
