10 Criminally Underrated Monster Movies

8. The Relic

Animal 2014
Paramount Pictures

You already knew that special effects superstar Stan Winston's work was always going to put in an inevitable appearance on this list. That said, it wasn't easy to find space on here.

After all, is Pumpkinhead really all that underrated? And when the film is a revenge horror, a slasher, and a supernatural story of being careful what you wish for, can it also be called a monster movie?

Luckily, 1997 brought us The Relic, a slow burn, somewhat drab mystery about a set of killings taking place in a museum. For much of its runtime this one is forgettable, only for it all to be made worth it by the Kothoga, an incredible Winston monster which we see in all its glory at the film's close and must be one of the master's most inventive and memorably terrifying creations.

Cathal Gunning hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
