5. Lexx
If you happened to be an insomniac in the late 90s/early 00s then chances are you will have fond memories of Lexx. Lexx has to be one of the most unusual and transgressive genre-splicing sci-fi shows ever produced. When watching an episode of Lexx you always felt you were going to see something that you had never seen before, be it an amorous Robot head falling in love with a dead assassin, a love slave morphing into lizard creature, a family of Space Hillbilly cannibals trying to eat an organic space ship, or a planet taken up entirely by a murderous TV studio, Lexx was anything but predictable. The Lexx itself was a living ship hollowed from a gigantic mosquito-like creature. Its crew consisted of the cowardly escaped prisoner Stanley Tweedle, who somehow found himself in possession of the key to the Lexx and therefore its captain, Kai the aforementioned dead assassin, the last of an ancient Jedi-like race who was reanimated after his death to become the ultimate killing machine, 790 the severed head of a Robot who accidentally receives love programming which makes him adore Kai, and Xev an escaped love slave whose DNA is accidentally spliced with a vicious cluster lizard giving her strength and agility as well as the ability to shift shape. Much of the joy to found in Guardians can also be found in Lexx, from its irreverence and humour, the interplay of its crew, and the pleasures of exploring a weird and wonderful Galaxy populated with all manner of strange worlds and nefarious aliens. True Guardians methadone!
