Like Bridge To Terabithia, anyone seeing My Girl for the first time would have been happy to expect a coming-of-age, Judy Bloom-style story of navigating the charming pitfalls of adolescence, with a side of family conflict not severe enough to ever seem particularly terrible.

Sure, there are some ideas in there that are a little more grown-up: like Vada's experiences with death and her anxiety over her father remarrying and the conflict with her new stepmother to be, but it most floats along harmlessly.

Well, right up until the moment Vada's best friend (and first kiss) Thomas J (Macaulay Culkin) tries to retrieve her lost mood ring from the woods and is stung to death by bees, tearing her (and our) heart from her chest in one quick blow.
