10 Directors With Make Or Break Movies For 2020

7. Cary Joji Fukunaga - No Time To Die

Working on critically acclaimed projects such as True Detective, Maniac and Beast of No Nation, Cary Joji Fukunaga is no stranger to taking risks and producing high quality end products.

That being said, he may be about to face his biggest challenge to date in the form of the tainted chalice that is the latest James Bond entry - No Time To Die.

Early on the likes of Top Boy's Yann Demange, Blade Runner 2049's Denis Villeneuve and Hell or High Water's David Mackenzie were all linked to the project, before legendary British director Danny Boyle agreed to take the reigns.

That appointment soon unravelled as it became clear that Boyle wasn't going to be allowed to tell the story he wanted in the picture and he soon left the project.

Now, with Fukunaga on board and Killing Eve writer Pheobe Waller-Bridge acting as a script advisor, you could argue that this particular Bond outing has the potential to either be ground-breaking or the latest victim of multiple influences clouding the vision of an original concept.

If Fukunaga can craft something truly unique and set the franchise up for a bold new future, he may find himself with more high profile offers like this landing on his doorstep going forward. Yet, if No Time To Die falls flat, he may have to take some time away from the big screen in order to recover.
