10 Directors With Make Or Break Movies For 2020

Another film which has found itself in its own personal developmental hell, is once-Fox-now-Disney's The New Mutants.

Originally set to drop in April 2018, New Mutants first set of shoots concluded in September 2017 and director Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars) confessed that principle photography for the film was 'stressful'. He also admitted that he felt as though he'd been 'a bit neutered' by the process due to the fact that Fox had requested the tone be lightened up - which was in stark contrast to the horror-style flick Boone had wanted to make.

Then, the film's release was pushed back to February 2019 in an effort to stay clear of Deadpool 2. Thankfully, this gave Boone time to make the film more frightening again - after Fox had been inspired by the reboot of It in 2017 - and these reshoots took place in mid-2018.

Various other delays followed before Fox's film studios were eventually bought out by Disney and the House of Mouse were said to be 'unimpressed' by New Mutants. Further work was done on the never-ending feature in order to create a film which was closer to Boone's original vision and early signs - a new trailer which dropped in 2020 - definitely point to a distinct new take on the mutant universe.

With the film spending so much time in limbo over the last few years, The New Mutants' impending release may prove to be worth the wait. However, it could kill off any prospects Boone has of directing another teen-drama in the future, if it just turns out to be a jumbled-up tonal mess.
