10 Directors With Make Or Break Movies For 2020
5. Joseph Kosinski - Top Gun: Maverick
Taking place roughly 30 or so years after the original flick, Top Gun: Maverick will see Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer return in their iconic roles along with new characters played by Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, John Hamm and Ed Harris.
A sequel to the pop-culture phenomenon that was Top Gun had been spit-balled for decades and original director Tony Scott was actually approached to direct a follow-up in 2010. In a devastating turn of events, Scott would commit suicide a few years later and the project was shelved for obvious reasons.
Throughout all of this Cruise still kept an interest in a second Top Gun movie and now after 34 years away from our screens, Oblivion director Joseph Kosinski is set to bring 'Maverick' back to the cockpit.
As with any film that manages to build anticipation over a long period of time, when the final product eventually lands on cinema screens the expectations can sometimes be unreasonably high.
Also, Kosinski has been attached to big properties in the past - Tron: Legacy, for example. Yet, that project didn't exactly set the world alight and he's only helmed three movies since, including Maverick.
So, if Top Gun: Maverick doesn't fulfil the original film's fans wishes and drops out of the sky, Kosinski may be forced to step away from the director's chair for an extended period of time. Though, if those same fans have their 'need for speed' rediscovered, Kosinski could finally establish himself as one of the top action-drama directors working today.
