10 Most Disappointing Comic Book Movies Of All-Time

2. Hulk (2003)

What a strange beast is Ang Lee's admirable but ultimately yawn-inducing take on the Hulk, who is arguably the most difficult comic book character to adapt to film. Lee, best known for films like Sense and Sensibility and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, isn't a natural fit for the material... it's clear from the get-go that his idea of a Hulk movie isn't just things getting smashed and broken, but one rich with existential drama. This might've worked had the majority of the movie not felt so flat and tiresome, the action scenes dull and sort of bonkers. Hulk has its fair share of defenders, of course, most of whom will cite Lee's attempts to transcend the material as commendable. But just because Lee tried to make a deeper, more dramatic Hulk picture doesn't mean it was the right way to go; most of the people who ventured into cinemas to see this thing expected two hours of ripped jean shorts and explosions. Instead, they got a movie that tried desperately hard not to be like a comic book - how did comic book fans expect to be anything else other than disappointed? Praiseworthy, but a notable failure.
