10 Most Disappointing Comic Book Movies Of All-Time
7. Superman Returns (2006)
Bryan Singer jumped ship from the X-Men franchise to direct Superman Returns, but he might as well have stayed put - chances are we would've been gifted with a far better third X-Men movie (Brett Ratner be gone), and this bizarre mess of half reboot/half sequel might have been shelved. Almost twenty years after the last Superman film, then, Warner Bros. decided to revisit the character in a movie that would've been better off as a straightforward reboot, but instead ended up being a confusing mass of half-realised ideas and concepts. To say that Superman Returns was disappointing to fans of the world's most iconic superhero is equivalent to saying that 9/11 was a "minor tragedy." Though there are lots of redeeming features, such as the brilliant plane rescue sequence, mostly Singer fails to engage with his material, and Superman Return fails to highlight what's good about its eponymous character. It didn't help that Brandon Roth was forgettable as Clark Kent, and Kate Bosworth made no sense as Lois Lane. The biggest problem, however, is simply that there is no tension.
