5. Savages
The Hype: Now, this was a rather specific object of hype for me. But anyone who's read Don Winslow's
Savages will understand getting worked up for the film. The book is one of the best works of crime fiction of recent years, brutal and kinetic and funny and beautifully written. And even if Oliver Stone hadn't directed a good movie in over a decade, surely that cast would balance him out, right?
The Reality: Nope. Basically nothing that made the book great is here. The California cool of the characters has turned into awful douchebagginess. The whole thing reeks of an old man trying to play cool, but failing miserably.
