10 Disney Live-Action Remakes That Won't Happen

Despite having a cult following, Disney's 1985 animated film The Black Cauldron will not receive a live-action remake for a multitude of reasons.

Made in 1985 with a budget of $44 million The Black Cauldron was the most expensive animated film ever made at the time and the failure of the film to recoup even half of its budget at the box office dooms fan's hopes of a live-action remake.

The Black Cauldron performed so badly at the box office that it put Walt Disney Feature Animation near bankruptcy and the film was not released on home video until 1998, 13 years after initial release.

A more serious tone with real threat and genuine scares contributed to poor general audience reception who perhaps expected a more classic Disney tale. Poor critic reviews also put doubt on a live-action remake.

Although Disney does still own the rights to the book series The Black Cauldron is based on (The Chronicles of Prydain) it is still unlikely that The Black Cauldron's story will be retold on the big screen in live-action form and even if The Chronicles of Prydain does reach the big screen it is unlikely the film would be connected to this often forgotten Disney animated film.
