7. Don't Look Up (2021)

Adam McKay's satirical sci-fi flick Don't Look Up has become doubly relevant of late, presenting a world that looks an awful lot like present day reality, using an impending astronomical impact event to highlight the wilful denial of US government and media in the face of crisis.

The film tells has astronomers Randall Mindy (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Kate Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence) discover an approaching comet that is set to destroy human civilisation if immediate action isn’t taken, and the roadblocks and ridicule they face when attempting to present their argument to government officials, the media and the public. A thoroughly Trumpian administration, led by President Janie Orlean (Meryl Streep) denies the evidence of not just science, but everyone’s own eyes and ears, using the rallying cry of "Don't Look Up" to keep people in blind obedience.

And in the end the powers that be succeed in their campaign of mass distraction around the comet (which, by the by, contains $trillions in rare minerals - sound familiar?), ensuring that the collision occurs and the planet is decimated. Only a few of the powerful, wealthy and "elite" escape the planet on an intergalactic ship - including the POTUS - but, although, they got their way, perhaps this isn't quite the victory they foresaw...
