10 Early Short Films From Modern Day Great Directors

8. My Best Friend's Birthday Party - Quentin Tarantino

my best friend's birthday party I don't actually count myself among Tarentino's most devout fans although I think it is undeniable that he can be a great filmmaker. He is someone who clearly has a deep love and passion for film and it is truly fascinating to watch him go to play as a young filmmaker in his short film My Best Friends Birthday Party from 1987. Tarantino is well known for his dialogue, and I think so of his funniest is on display in this 40 minute short. The opening story that Tarantino tells himself is side splitting hilarious. Although, I encourage any young director to take caution when trying imitate Tarantino. He is great with dialogue. Almost one of a kind. Unless you are 100% certain that the dialogue you are writing is genuinely funny and tells us something about these characters, try and visual your scenes and reduce the amount of dialogue you have written because it is always going to be too much. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X6MUbRZSg80
