10 Essential Movie Scenes Only Available In Extended Cuts
1. Ripley's Daughter And Newt's Introduction - Aliens (Extended Edition)
For some reason, this entire sub-plot was excised from the theatrical cut, thus removing Ripley's entire motivation when it comes to rescuing and becoming a maternal figure for Newt.
The missing scenes not only introduce Newt much earlier in the film - showing her parent's tragic demise at the hands of the Xenomorphs - but show us that Ripley's daughter had grown old and died in the years that Ripley had been lost in space following her escape from the Nostromo.
What's particularly egregious about this entry is that this scene is so fundamental to the film's core theme - which focuses on motherhood. Everything from Ripley's loss, to Newt's newfound status as an orphan, and even the Alien Queen herself plays directly into this central theme, and the decision to cut the scene of Ripley discovering her daughter had perished robs the film of its true emotional core.
The relationship between Ripley and Newt does shine through in the theatrical version, but upon seeing the Extended Cut you'll likely agree that without this initial set-up, the film feels hollow in comparison, lacking the emotional intent that James Cameron was going for.
Without it, Aliens feels like a largely incomplete film.
