10 Famous Movies That Got Away With Half-Assed Plots
8. The Avengers Features The Most Generic Plot In Comic Book Movie History
Try and think about the plot of The Avengers. If you had to write a few sentences to sum up the storyline, what, exactly, would you put down? "Uh, Loki wants to open a portal to an alien world to let aliens in to destroy the world and... and then the Avengers have to stop that from happening?" That's pretty much it. For a two and a half hour film, and one which marks the culmination of several interconnected films coming together, isn't that a little bit half-assed? Can it really be justified as a plot at all? And of course, nobody gave a damn about what the plot of The Avengers was because... well, it's The Avengers! People were only interested in watching the gang teaming up and beating the heck out of things. Still, this is one of those movies where you kind of don't really get what's happening but your brain tells you not to worry about it because Tony Stark is sharing scenes of extensive banter with the likes of Bruce Banner and Captain America, so just stop thinking for a minute, will you? Still, a vague plot about Loki stealing a staff and a portal letting aliens into our dimension just feels half-formed; it's never really explained to the point where we understand what is going on, exactly, and - at times - it feels like the movie is just happy to get by on the whole "Avengers!" thing. And annoyingly (or not annoyingly, as the case may be), it sort of does. Oh, well.
