3. Irreversible (2002)
Another film by Gaspar Noé, Irreversible has two shocking scenes of ultraviolence. The first is the rape of Alex, who has just found out she is pregnant that day and is coming home early from a party after her boyfriend acts like a douche. She enters the Metro to find a man assaulting a transvestite prostitute. He turns his attentions on Alex and sodomises her in a vicious manner in scenes that are hardly bearable to watch. Whenever her boyfriend Marcus and his friend Pierre see Alex being carted away in an ambulance, they go on a furious hunt around Paris' seedy gay underworld to find the man responsible - Le Tenia (The Tapeworm). They think that they have found him - he grabs Marcus and tries to rape him. Pierre gets a fire extinguisher and brutally beats the man's brains to a pulp. Unfortunately, this is not Le Tenia. The whole film is ever so slightly soul destroying.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
