10 Filmmakers Obsessed With ONE Thing

9. Martin Scorsese - Catholic Guilt

Quentin Tarantino From Dusk Till Dawn
Universal Pictures

Though your first thought might be to most associate Martin Scorsese with crime - which, in fairness, accounts for a huge swath of his back catalogue - in terms of core motifs, his true fascination is Catholic guilt.

Scorsese, who was raised in a Catholic household, has imbued notions of religious guilt into a wide selection of his works, most prominently including Who's That Knocking at My Door, Mean Streets, Raging Bull, Bringing Out the Dead, The Departed, Shutter Island, and The Irishman.

The majority of these films see the central characters attempting to reconcile their often violent vocations with their faith, while Scorsese tackled the theme more overtly in two of his films - The Last Temptation of Christ and the recent Silence.

And Scorsese freely admits that he holds onto his own share of Catholic guilt, saying, "The most important legacy of my Catholicism is guilt. A major helping of guilt, like garlic."
