10 Critically Panned Films That Will Be Future Classics
2. The Brown Bunny
The Brown Bunny was released under a black cloud of controversy in 2003 for one main reason: the film purportedly included a scene of unsimulated sex between star Chloë Sevigny and co-star/writer/producer/director/horrible man Vincent Gallo. Despite being an arty independent film people were still shocked that a scene of this nature would appear in it and critics took Gallo to task for it. One of the film's staunchest detractors was legendary critic Roger Ebert who engaged in a very unpleasant war of words with Gallo, with Ebert calling the film the worst in the history of the Cannes Film Festival and Gallo responding by saying that he hoped that Ebert would get cancer. Amidst all of this controversy people kind of forgot about the film, which actually turned out to be really good after Gallo went back and re-cut it. The director and Ebert made up and he even gave the edited version of the film 'two thumbs up'. One of the best and most daring independent films of the 2000's, the film will hopefully be judged on its own merits and not on the rather avoidable controversy and backlash that followed its initial Cannes premiere.
