Man Of Steel was one of the most eagerly anticipated films of 2013. The first Superman film since Bryan Singer's unbelievably boring 2006 effort Superman Returns, fans and critics were eager to see what Zack Snyder would do with the iconic superhero. Snyder didn't do a lot according to a lot of critics and, after a promising trailer and promotional campaign, the reviews were decidedly average or, sometimes, very bad. Most critics complained that the film lacked the joy and humour of the Christopher Reeve Superman films and was too cold and detached to actually enjoy. However, this is film's biggest strength. Fans had been clamouring for a good, 'serious' Superman film for a long time. And although the film does contain a lot of needless violence and overblown spectacle, it also has emotional weight. The scene in which Clark's father, Jonathan Kent, refuses to let his son save him from a tornado, for example, is one of the most emotional you will find in a comic book film. Judged with fresh eyes a few years from now (and depending on how Superman V Batman: Dawn Of Justice turns out) fans could be calling Man Of Steel one of the best superhero films of all time and a classic of the genre.
