10 Films That Risk Being 2014's Biggest Box Office Failures

9. The Maze Runner

Yet another young adult adaptation makes its way to the big screen, hoping to emulate the success of box office heavyweights Harry Potter, Twilight and The Hunger Games. In recent years, dozens of literary adaptations have been given the movie treatment in an attempt to launch a money-spinning franchise and almost all of them have failed, often spectacularly. The success, or lack thereof, of the upcoming Divergent will definitely lay down a marker for The Maze Runner to follow. A sequel has been in development since the movie was in production, but that is generally the case for all potential franchise starters these days. The recent first trailer established the premise and gave off a distinct 'The Hunger Games for guys' vibe, which was no doubt the intention of 20th Century Fox given the massive financial success that Katniss Everdeen's adventures have enjoyed so far. With the untested Wes Ball making his feature debut and an unassuming late September release date, there is every chance that The Maze Runner falls by the wayside like so many others in the genre. As box office results have proven over the years, it doesn't matter if the book has a huge fanbase or not; if the movie sucks, people won't see it.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
