10 Films That Risk Being 2014's Biggest Box Office Failures
6. Exodus
2014's second Biblical movie comes with undoubted pedigree; an historical epic directed by Ridley Scott and an impressive cast led by Christian Bale that also stars Joel Edgerton, Aaron Paul, John Turtorro and Sigourney Weaver. So what is it doing on a list of movies that risk box office failure? Read on to find out. The first issue is the genre itself. Since Scott himself brought the historical epic back to the mainstream with Gladiator, similarly-themed efforts haven't fared quite so well. The director failed to repeat the trick twice with Kingdom of Heaven and Robin Hood, while the likes of Alexander, King Arthur and The Alamo also brought in disappointing box office numbers. Like the aforementioned titles, Exodus comes in with a budget well north of $100m but being a Biblical adaptation the movie will need to make at least some effort to appeal to the religious demographic given the recent problems surrounding Darren Aronofsky's Noah. The second and more important reason is the December 12 release date, which provides a worrying amount of competition. Christopher Nolan's Interstellar arrives on November 7, but if it holds as well as the director's previous movies then it will theoretically still be inside the domestic top ten. November 21 brings The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 which will dominate the box office for the rest of the year and if that wasn't enough, the final installment in The Hobbit trilogy arrives just five days later on December 17. Both adult and family audiences also have Horrible Bosses 2, Annie, Into the Woods and Night at the Museum 3 available at the same time so to put it simply; Exodus needs to be a very good movie to stand a real chance of success.
I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
