10 Films That Brilliantly Nailed Topical Issues

The original Deadpool film was such a delicious breath of fresh air that its true impact hasn't been appreciated anywhere near as much as it should be. Tackling a comic book franchise that was taking itself way too seriously and introducing a plot that actively went for fun over any franchise setting, it was exactly what action based films needed at the time.

But the genius of the film is not just that it makes fun of the comic and action film genre, but completely deconstructs them. The manner in which the film hilariously addresses the issue of violence against women in these genres is first rate, and if anything is even more topical now than at the time of the film's release.

In a montage featuring Reynolds' Wade Wilson brutally taking down a range of villains on his way to track down the greasy Francis Freeman, our antihero has a brief encounter with a female villain. In trademark 'breaking the fourth wall' fashion, Deadpool debates with the audience whether he should attack the woman, asking if it is more sexist to do so, or even more sexist if he doesn't.

With the rise of 'woke' films featuring female characters physically beating up male 'bad guys', Deadpool's comment is even more pertinent. While dished out as a cheeky one liner here, the issue of what male characters can do to female characters is certainly one to consider.
