10 Films That Prove 1984 Was The Best Year For '80s Movies
7. A Nightmare On Elm Street
While a film about a paedophile who murders people in their dreams doesn't immediately appear to epitomise the fun-lovin', hard-rockin' spirit of the '80s discussed earlier, it's a legendary film that had to be included in this list. Largely regarded as being one of the best horror movies of all time, and definitely of the '80s, A Nightmare On Elm Street won critical acclaim for it's unique blend of psychological horror. While the film still packs enough punch to scare even today, looking back there are some pretty quirky elements to the film that surely you'd only find in a serious film in the '80s; a scene where someone's being chased by a laughing goat; Freddy Krueger's arms growing 20 feet long like a scene out of The Might Boosh; a phone that sprout's lips and licks a girl's face. These are all scenes that fit into the weird, trippy nightmare vibe of the film, but would seem a little out of place in the slick, tight, ubercool world of cinema today. Maybe it's just the way it's aged, or maybe Wes Craven was just having a little fun. Whichever way you look at it, it's a 1984 classic.
