4. To Rome With Love
Release Date: June 22 (US, limited), No UK date yet
This film seems an odd choice given the nature of the other films on this list because it doesn't scream "summer blockbuster" when you read it's description. But after Midnight in Paris, Woody Allen's follow up film seems like just the break needed in an action packed summer. While the plot is fairly secretive, the trailer is full of awkward comedy and the All-Star cast (Alec Baldwin, Penelope Cruz, Jesse Eisenberg, Ellen Page, and Woody Allen himself) makes this a movie worthy of getting excited about.
3. Lawless
Release Date: August 29th (US) and September 7th (UK)
While this film is along the lines of most summer films (read: full of action, guns, explosions, and violence), it has two things going for it that other summer blockbusters usually don't: a separate, unique (for this era) genre and a cast full of critical favorites. This western is about a bootlegging business during Prohibition run by three brothers (Shia LaBeouf, Tom Hardy, Jason Clarke) who are hunted down by the law (Guy Pearce) and rival gangs (Gary Oldman). If that isn't enough, it stars the oeuvre Jessica Chastain, making the film a clear favorite of critics.
