5. Hot Shots Part Deux
'80s action movies were almost BEGGING to be satirically torn apart to the degree that Hot Shots Part Deux takes it.
While it's not the most clever comedy out there, this is a brilliant example of quantity over quality being the best approach. The jokes in this film are so fast and so consistent, that even if there are several jokes back to back that just flat out don't work, they're long gone by the time you notice them, and they've gone right back to hitting you with jokes that leave you on the floor sobbing with laughter.
And on top of that, the satire works because, like with Tropic Thunder, this movie matches the scale and intensity of your average Rambo movie. But unlike Tropic Thunder, Charlie Sheen plays it perfectly by keeping as stone faced as humanely possible. Which of course makes every joke hit all the harder.
Its satire is pretty surface level - mainly sticking with the absurd spectacle of this era of movies without getting into the messy politics underlying them - but on the other hand, it's funny as hell, and with comedy, that's what matters most.
