10 Funniest Non-Monty Python Films From Monty Python Members

1. A Fish Called Wanda

Monty Python Cast
United International Pictures

Kevin Kline and Jamie Lee Curtis make their first - but not last - bid for becoming honorary members of an Americanized version of Monty Python. That might sound like a slight against them, but it's not. Because they actually prove themselves to be, at times, even more adept at playing a clever sort of dopiness than their castmates...who practically invented that brand of comedy.

Posing as a hyper-dumb caper, A Fish Called Wanda is actually an incredibly subtle, smart, character-driven comedy that explores the cultural differences between the British and Americans. Now, just in case simply reading that sentence put you to sleep, you should know that this still isn't a particularly tasteful or tame movie.

It's erratic, it's zany, it's that perfect pitch of droll that one can expect from the best Python work.

Many of the gags can stand alongside the best Flying Circus had to offer, but that's not what really impresses here. It's the interactions and overall chemistry between the four principal actors - Curtis, Kline, John Cleese, and Michael Palin - that makes Wanda so special.

Cleese tones down his usual hubris-to-the-max bit here, allowing Kline to take over the overtly pompous role, which naturally makes him the most enjoyable to laugh at. But everyone performs to the height of their talent here.

And if you don't chuckle at least once every thirty seconds...you're a buffoon.
