10 Funniest Non-Monty Python Films From Monty Python Members

5. Brazil

It would be tough to call Brazil a comedy with a straight face. Though, to be honest, this genre-bender is just as much a comedy as it is literally anything else. It's a sci-fi fantasy drama romance black comedy political satire. With a hint of ARGHH GET IT AWAY STAB IT UNTIL IT DIES thrown into the mix

The core concept of the film, however, is simpler: Stuck in a humdrum life, humanity must slog through the muck if they want to be able to reach the stars. It's a little bleak, particularly in the visceral, violent way in which Gilliam portrays common bureaucracy. The big, bad establishment isn't just an inane political structure, it's an actual monster that has no problem ripping off your fingernails and making you eat them if you decide to question its impunity.

So...right, not exactly a laugh riot so far. Most of the chuckles stem from extremely uncomfortable situations, much like the grimmest scenes from Meaning of Life.

And if you're waiting on a Python alumni to break the tension with some affable slapstickery, you'll be mighty disappointed when Michael Palin shows up in a lab coat and a demonic baby mask and starts joyfully torturing people.

But fear not, Bob Hoskins and Robert De Niro frequently come to the rescue with some genuinely funny supporting work. It's especially impossible not to snicker whenever De Niro's ninja assassin/heating engineer appears on screen.
