7. Prevenge

The feature debut from British actor, writer, and cult icon Alice Lowe (Sightseers, Black Mountain Poets, and Kill List), Prevenge is a delightfully dark and twisted black comedy slasher film that sees the recently widowed Ruth (Lowe) embark on a murderous rampage of revenge against those she holds responsible or her late husband’s death, believing herself to be guided by her unborn child.

Written by Lowe based on her own personal experiences with pregnancy (and filmed when she was seven months pregnant herself), her stellar debut achieved modest success on the festival circuit and grabbed the adoration of critics, with The Telegraph hailing it as a “kaleidoscope of violence and humour”. As razor-sharp the knife Ruth uses to slash her victims, Lowe is accompanied by a remarkable cast that includes Tom Davis, Kate Dickie, and Jo Hartley who add to the comedy to phenomenal effect.

Prevenge’s wild premise isn’t the only thing that makes it worth your attention either. Alongside all the blood and wit, Lowe pours a lot of tenderness into her film, too - especially moments where Ruth talks to the voice of her child.

Lowe's directorial debut is truly unlike any horror or comedy film you’ve ever seen.
