10 Genuine Lessons Batman V Superman Can Learn From Batman & Robin
8. Address The Criticisms Of Earlier Movies
The Mistake Batman And Robin Made: Warner Bros. were never above making big creative changes to, in their eyes, improve Batman. When Tim Burton's overly-gothic Batman Returns (on which the director had total creative freedom) got a tepid box office and angered parents with its darker themes, the studio took the franchise in a totally different direction, bringing on Schumacher to make Batman Forever. Oddly enough, addressing complaints wasn't as forward in their minds after the garishly over-the-top Forever. Was Forever a better film needing less improvement than Returns? Of course not - it just had a better box office gross. Thus, many of the big mistakes Forever made (campy acting, day-glow Gotham and, worst of all, those Bat-nipples) were carried over to Batman & Robin, to inexplicably worse results. Will Dawn Of Justice Learn The Lesson? It actually seems like it. As Batman V Superman has progressed it seems key issues with Man Of Steel are going to be addressed. A less-than-expected box office for the reboot has no doubt motivated this rather than any creative impetus, but it's still reassuring. The thoughtless mass-destruction of Metropolis that so angered detractors looks set to be explored - it not only looks to be a backdrop to the Bruce Wayne/Lex Luthor side of the story, but also the source of a major public anti-Superman bent. And given Batman has to make it to the end credits alive, that major fan bug-bear of Supes getting out of problems by killing his enemies must be dealt with in some form too.
