10 Great British Horror Films Of The Last Decade
7. The Ritual
Before Midsommar struck Sweden off everyone's holiday destinations, this film from director David Bruckner flew under the radar on its cinematic release back in 2017. Despite not setting the box office world on fire when it came out, it most certainly is worth your attention.
Based on the novel by Adam Nevill, the film follows four friends embark to Sweden on a hiking trip in memory of a friend who died 6 months previously.
Rafe Spall leads the film as Luke, who was present when their friend was killed and is haunted by his inaction. However, in the picturesque country of Sweden there is something lurking in the woods more deadly than crippling memories, and it’s stalking them one by one.
What makes The Ritual so good is how fresh it feels, aided by a desire to be different in a market currently churning out demonic possession films like canned food. Sure, there’s Blair Witch vibes, but it packs a dramatic punch few modern horrors achieve in a ninety minute run time.
