Franck Khalfoun's directorial debut P2 follows a businesswoman called Angela (Rachel Nichols) who finds herself trapped inside a parking lot after working late on Christmas Eve. Soon after, she discovers she was locked in by a psychotic security guard called Thomas (Wes Bentley).

The premise is paper-thin, but there's nothing wrong with that when the tension is this engrossing. Using the security cameras, Thomas can locate Angela easily, making it impossible for her to hide. As he showcased in American Beauty, Wes Bentley is effortless at conveying an unhinged man, making every moment he's on-screen absolutely nerve-shredding.

Like Jigsaw, Thomas torments his prey psychologically as well as physically. At one point, he orders Angela to attack a co-worker who groped her during the Christmas party. Even though Thomas is out of his mind, moments like this are chilling, since it highlights how much time and effort he's put into this mind game.

Another reason why P2 stands out is its compelling protagonist. When Angela realises nobody is coming to her aid, she takes matters into her own hands, transitioning from a damsel in distress to a badass heroine.

P2 doesn't reinvent the wheel, but it's worth a look, especially for anyone looking for something a bit scary and gruesome this Christmas.
